Weaving through the New York skyline, the Crown stands prominently in vibrant blue hues above the Griffiss Business and Technology Park. Renowned artist and sculptor Rainer Maria Wehner embarked on her first galvanizing experience, opting for hot-dip galvanizing (HDG) not only for its protective qualities but also for its cost-effectiveness. In comparison to a competing three-coat paint system, HDG not only proved more affordable but also significantly extended the life expectancy of the artwork. Wehner, envisioning a flawlessly smooth finish for her masterpiece, found HDG to be the ideal choice.
To achieve the desired smoothness, the piece underwent powder coating after the galvanizing process. The combination of galvanizing and powder coating resulted in an exceptionally durable and visually appealing product. The Crown, adorned in its radiant blue glory, boasts a virtually flawless finish in the sky. The daily influx of 5,800 people to the area bears witness to why Wehner was thoroughly pleased with the duplex system’s results. The zigzagging sculpture will be admired for generations to come, showcasing the success of Hubbell Galvanizing’s expertise in galvanizing.
